High School Special Education Teacher – Post-High Program
The High School Special Education Teacher – Post-High Program provides specialized instruction and transition activities/services to students with significant disabilities (ages 18–22) who remain eligible for services under IDEA. This position is responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive post-high program focused on independent living skills, career and technical training, employment readiness, community integration, and real-world experiences.
The teacher collaborates closely with families, related service providers, Transition Specialist, outside agencies, and community partners to ensure students develop the functional, social, and employment skills necessary for adult life.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized, functional curriculum aligned with each student’s IEP goals and Virginia Standards of Learning (as appropriate to functional level).
- Provide direct instruction in:
- Independent living skills (personal care, hygiene, cooking, budgeting, transportation, household management)
- Functional academics (functional literacy, money skills, time management)
- Social and communication skills
- Self-determination and self-advocacy
- Community safety and mobility
- Design and implement structured career and technical training experiences within school and community settings.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse cognitive, communication, behavioral, and physical needs.
- Utilize evidence-based practices and data-driven decision-making.
- Conduct age-appropriate transition assessments.
- Coordinate and supervise:
- Community-based instruction (CBI)
- Job sampling and job coaching
- Supported employment opportunities
- Internships and volunteer placements
- Provide direct job skills instruction including:
- Workplace behavior and soft skills
- Resume building and interview preparation
- Task completion and stamina building
- Following schedules and workplace routines
- Collaborate with related service providers (OT, PT, SLP, behavior specialists) to implement integrated programming.
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with federal and Virginia special education regulations.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student progress and services.
- Collect and analyze data to measure student growth toward IEP goals.
- Manage classroom environment and promote positive behavioral supports.
- Supervise and direct paraprofessionals and instructional assistants.
- Coordinate community transportation schedules and safety procedures for off-campus instruction.
- Maintain inventory and instructional materials for functional skills training.
- Ensure compliance with safety procedures for community-based instruction.
