HCPS - Juvenile Detention Home

This is a 239‑day/11‑month assignment that will support the instructional needs of the students at the Juvenile Detention Home.

• Plan, organize, and deliver instruction to meet individual and group learning needs utilizing state guidelines and division curriculum.
• Regularly exhibit knowledge in learning theory and best practices.
• Consistently act in the best interests of students and model appropriate behavior in all professional interactions.
• Administer the TABE assessment to adults and interpret scores for appropriate class placement.
• Actively seek out potential students within the educational setting.
• Provide individual and group instruction to adult students in the subject area of English.
• Collaborate with ESOL and Exceptional Education instructors to facilitate dual enrollment and transition to ABE courses within the jail program.
• Set goals and objectives with adult students.
• Humanize instruction by planning a program of study that meets individual needs.
• Possess computer skills; strong classroom management and organizational skills; have excellent oral and written communication skills; experience with adults and/or high‑school students preferred.
• Implement all curriculum programs adopted systemwide in a positive and efficient manner.
• Establish clear objectives for all learning experiences and communicate these to students.
• Use a variety of resources, materials, and methods to improve instruction effectiveness.
• Take precautions to protect and maintain facilities, equipment, and materials.
• Emphasize and enforce safety factors within the classroom, building, and property.
• Supervise students throughout the school as assigned or as circumstances require.
• Maintain a disciplined atmosphere appropriate to the teaching environment.
• Establish and maintain cooperative relations with co‑workers.

• Valid Virginia teaching license required.
• Eligible endorsements include English, math, science, history, and/or special education.
• Preferred endorsement in adult education.
• Must obtain Henrico County Sheriff’s Office security clearance.

Physical demands include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and lift items up to 25 pounds.

This posting is for the 2025‑26 school year with a contractual start date of July 14, 2025. The annual salary will be determined once the 2025‑2026 school year financial plan is approved and adopted in the spring of 2025.
