The University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications and nominations for the Donald Black Professor in Holocaust Studies
, an exceptional opportunity for a distinguished scholar to shape the future of Holocaust Studies within one of the nation’s most vibrant public universities.
Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, UVA has evolved into a selective, comprehensive research institution encompassing twelve schools in Charlottesville, as well as the College at Wise and a Northern Virginia campus. The University enrolls approximately 25,000 students from all 50 states and 111 countries and employs nearly 30,000 faculty and staff, including 12,000 in UVA Health. UVA is one of only two public universities in the nation that meets 100 percent of demonstrated financial need while maintaining a need-blind admissions policy.
The Donald Black Professor holds an endowed chair and will join a thriving, well-supported Jewish Studies program poised for major growth. The chair holder will enjoy access to robust resources for research and programming and will have the opportunity to collaborate with world-class colleagues across disciplines. As a visible ambassador for Jewish Studies at UVA, the Donald Black Professor will have the freedom to define a distinctive intellectual agenda, mentor the next generation of scholars, and help sustain a flourishing academic and public conversation about the Holocaust and its enduring resonances.
The University seeks a scholar of international stature whose work demonstrates both intellectual rigor and originality and who will contribute to the program’s continued vitality as it enters an exciting new era of expansion and collaboration.
Beyond this, the search is intentionally broad in scope: candidates from any discipline are encouraged to apply, including scholars who work on literature, art, film, photography, or music of the Holocaust; questions of gender or sexuality; memory and museum studies; archaeology, geography or mapping;
European or global histories of the Holocaust; or other areas that deepen and diversify the field.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Accomplished and widely recognized scholar of the Holocaust, qualified for appointment at the rank of Professor (or as a senior Associate Professor promo table to full in the first year of appointment).
- Demonstrated expertise in the history of the Holocaust and the ability to teach regularly in that area.
- Academic record of teaching excellence and scholarly distinction in a related field.
