The Vice-Chair of Research will work directly as a practicing emergency medicine clinician and a member of the department leadership team with a primary focus on research productivity through quantifiable measures and means, internal/external funding opportunities from industry and government, pan-university collaborative research activities, and peer-institutional and agency collaboration. The role includes an understanding of academic instruction and service activities with a focus on the clinical programs.

While there is a designated clinical coverage commitment, this position provides protected time to support scholarly pursuits based on a prior sustained record of achievement, retained and engaged funding, and a history of successful collaborative research and study activities. The position carries a faculty appointment in the University of Virginia School of Medicine on the clinical faculty or clinician educator track at the Assistant, Associate, or Professor level.

Responsibilities
  • Research – The primary focus includes scholarly publication, attending academic conferences, obtaining grants, and contributing to leadership roles in scholarly associations. External grant funding and federal agency funding are expected and supported by the department to sustain ongoing research activities.
  • Clinical Activities – Faculty serve as attending physicians within the UVA emergency department. Residency in emergency medicine is required; board-eligibility/certification is required. Preference given to applicants with additional fellowship training and board certifications.
  • Teaching – Encompasses all activities that facilitate student learning, including classroom contact hours, office hours, class preparation, grading, advising, evaluating and providing course materials, facilitating e-learning, and related duties.
  • Service – Involves university and departmental committee participation, attending meetings, student recruitment, and routine administrative tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Qualified candidates must have an MD or DO and residency training in Emergency Medicine. Applicants with specific fellowship training in research, administration, and/or a track record of NIH or other recognized agency-funded research are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to advancing an academic career with the potential for leadership and collaboration to grow the emergency medicine research program.

This opportunity is for an EM Physician with a focused research career and sustained engagement in clinical care, service, and teaching, with protected time allocated to support funded research pursuits.

There is an established emergency medicine residency program and fellowships in Medical Toxicology, EMS, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Ultrasound, Research, Administration, Global Health, and Education.
