This position plays a key role in managing Hanover County’s social media presence and shaping how the County communicates with residents online. The Multimedia Communications Specialist is a hands‑on content creator responsible for developing written copy, graphics and photography that highlight County programs, services, projects and people.
Working independently and as part of a collaborative communications team, this role plans and produces engaging digital content for social media and web platforms. The position supports community engagement efforts by helping translate government information into clear, accessible and visually compelling stories.
This role is well suited for someone who enjoys creativity, variety and public service storytelling in a fast-paced environment. Video skills are a plus but are not required.
General Description:Supports the Communications and Community Engagement Team by leading the County’s social media presence and creating engaging multimedia content that informs and connects residents with Hanover County government. Serves as a primary content creator producing written, photographic and digital content for web, social media and County communications.
Organization:The Communications Specialist reports to the Director of Communications and Community Engagement and supervises no staff.
Essential Functions:- Leads Hanover County’s social media efforts including content strategy, posting schedules, audience engagement and performance tracking.
- Creates original written, photographic and digital content for social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X and Nextdoor.
- Generates content for the County website to ensure timely, accurate and engaging information.
- Takes photos and captures visual content of County events, projects and programs.
- Writes news releases and assists with distribution to residents and community partners.
- Assists with Freedom of Information Act requests and public records support.
- Contributes to the development of communications plans to support both short and long range organizational objectives.
- Assists with implementation of the Engage Hanover Citizens Academy.
- Works at Board of Supervisors meetings as assigned to support coverage, content creation and communications needs.
- Assists with coordinating County events and news conferences including content development and on‑site communications support.
- Completes special projects as needed to support department and County priorities.

- Knowledge of social media platforms, trends and best practices.
- Ability to create compelling written and visual content for digital audiences.
- Basic photography skills and an eye for visual storytelling.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong command of the English language, grammar and Associated Press style.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines and work independently or as part of a team.
- Creative thinking and the ability to translate complex government topics into clear, engaging content.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications or a related field required with a minimum of two years of related experience preferred or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience managing or contributing to organizational social media accounts is strongly preferred.
SpecialConditions:

- Must obtain valid Driver’s License within 30 days of employment to be eligible to operate a county vehicle.
- Twelve‑month probationary period.
