Accomack County is seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Code Enforcement Officer to perform skilled technical work involving on-site inspections, plan reviews, and code enforcement for residential and commercial construction. Under general supervision, this position ensures that new and existing structures comply with all applicable building codes, fire codes, zoning ordinances, and safety regulations. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who can work effectively with builders, business owners, developers, and the public.
Applicants must be able to perform field work and may be assigned to do inspections in any location within the County.
- Conduct inspections of new construction, additions, alterations, and existing buildings at all stages for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and related regulations.
- Ensure construction follows approved plans and permit requirements; review special inspections as needed.
- Evaluate existing buildings for hazardous conditions and initiate appropriate abatement procedures.
- Enforce building and zoning codes; issue compliance reports, notices of violation, and correction orders; prepare cases and testify in court when required.
- Follow up on violations to confirm corrective actions are completed.
- Investigate building- and code-related complaints.
- Review building plans and permit applications for code compliance, flood zones, and occupancy loads.
- Assist the public at the permit counter and by phone; answer code questions and help builders with contractor licensing.
- Determine physical addresses and assign 911 addresses using GPS coordinates.
- Conduct inspections of amusement devices/rides and in-ground/above ground fuel storage tanks.
- Use computer and mobile devices to schedule inspections, document results, and track permits and related activities.
- Stay current with code changes through study and training.
- Perform related duties as needed, including post-disaster assessment team participation, permit processing assistance, fee collection, and record maintenance.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Ability to read and interpret building plans, specifications, and technical materials.
- Experience enforcing building and zoning codes and ordinances.
- Basic mathematical proficiency.
- Associate degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in building construction, inspection, or a related trade (fire, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, fire protection, elevator, or property maintenance).
- Experience with Energov software
- Equivalent combinations of training and experience will be considered.
- Strong knowledge of Virginia building codes and inspection procedures.
- Ability to interpret maps, construction drawings, and technical documents accurately.
- Professional communication skills for interacting with coworkers and the public.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and departmental software.
- Ability to use portable electronic devices and computerized systems.
