General Function

Under the supervision of the Resident Camp Executive Director, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Resident Camp Program Coordinator shall be responsible for the safety, development and training of an individual program area. The Resident Camp Program Coordinator will lead the campers and staff in a safe and respectful manner through approved games, activities and special events while fostering the four core values of the YMCA:
Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. With an emphasis on ensuring the highest quality service to members and guests, the Resident Camp Program Coordinator will work with all staff to welcome, connect, support, and engage all members, guests, and staff.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.
  • Experience working with campers ages 8–16 in an outdoor setting.
  • At least one-year experience in a related field;
    Camp Kekoka experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 1-year staff supervisory experience required.
  • Able to help campers as well as parents through issues that commonly occur in a summer camp setting.
  • Ability to be flexible to sudden changes in schedule, staff and campers.
  • Be a strong, positive role model for campers and fellow staff members.
  • Be safety conscious.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle pressure.
  • Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Background must include strong skills in parent relations, staff development, and child development.
  • Certification in Wilderness First Aid/CPR required within 30 days prior to first day of working camp.
  • Certification(s) for specific program area.
  • Medication Administration Training (MAT) Certification required prior to first day of working camp.
  • Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to:
    New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Sexual Harassment upon hire and annually thereafter.
  • Satisfactory completion of a criminal background check, fingerprinting, sex offender registry check, and Child Protective Services check.
Essential Functions
  • Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA.
  • Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
  • Ensure safety of all staff and participants.
  • Provide accurate rosters for the weekly attendance and transportation of Alexandria campers.
  • Assist the Resident Camp Executive Director in design and implementation of a curriculum that is age appropriate and challenging while encouraging growth and development of the campers. Activities should provide for skill development and program progression.
  • Assist in facilitation and coordination of transportation operations and ensure the overall security of the campers during pick-up and drop‑off.
  • Assist in maintaining an orderly arrangement and appearance of Camp Kekoka through attractive and functional equipment, set‑up, and decorations.
  • Assist in the purchase, care, maintenance, and storage of program supplies and equipment in accordance with the operating budget with direction from the Resident Camp Executive Director.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  • Follow Virginia Standards for Overnight Camps and department standards.
  • Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate.
