The Entry-Level Process Technician - Paper Packaging is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of paper forming and packaging equipment that produces food-grade paper packaging. This role sets up and operates production machines, performs basic changeovers and adjustments, monitors quality (dimensions, coating, print, and package integrity), and ensures products are packed, labeled, and palletized according to specifications. The Process Technician follows all safety, GMP, and housekeeping standards while working closely with Production, Maintenance, and Quality to meet daily production goals.

Typical responsibilities

* Start up, set up, and shut down manufacturing machinery according to standard operating procedures.

* Adjust machine parameters (temperature, pressure, speed, etc.) and other settings to keep product within spec.

* Monitor gauges, sensors, and control systems, and respond to alarms or abnormal conditions.

* Inspect and test in-process or test-batch product, documenting results and flagging quality issues.

* Perform basic troubleshooting and routine equipment maintenance or call maintenance/engineering when issues exceed their scope.

* Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety and 5S or similar standards.

* Record operating data in logs or electronic systems and communicate status to operators, technicians, and supervisors at shift change.

Common requirements (entry level)

* Education:

High school diploma or GED; some employers prefer or substitute an associate degree or certificate in process technology, chemical technology, or a related technical field.

* Experience:

Truly entry-level roles may accept candidates with no direct experience but some manufacturing or technical background; others want 1-3 years in production, maintenance, or military technical roles.

* Basic math, mechanical aptitude, and ability to read work instructions, technical drawings, or simple P&IDs.

* Ability to work 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, and rotating schedules in an industrial environment.

Key skills and traits

* Technical:
Machine operation, equipment monitoring, basic troubleshooting, quality control testing, ability to follow technical procedures and drawings.

* Safety focus:
Knowledge of and adherence to lockout/tagout, PPE, and other plant safety procedures.

* Soft skills:

Attention to detail, dependability, communication, problem-solving, and working well in a team.
