Job Summary:

The Continuous Improvement Intern will support on‑site Lean and improvement efforts within the mill environment. This hands‑on operational role is designed for a student interested in manufacturing, Lean systems, problem solving, and process optimization. The intern will work closely with operators, support staff, and mill leadership to assist with Lean tool training, data collection, process assessments, and improvement events.

The CI Intern will learn and apply the Columbia Way (Lean Philosophy), participate in kaizen and problem‑solving activities, and gain exposure to the daily management systems used to drive safety, quality, productivity, and stability.

Key Responsibilities:

Problem Solving & Standardizing Work

* Participate in problem‑solving sessions using A3, 5‑Why, and 8‑step methods.

* Observe and document current work processes to identify bottlenecks, variation, or safety concerns.

* Support development, documentation, and sustainment of STW and Operational Work Standards

* Support Daily Management System (DMS) walks by helping capture problems, document actions, and track follow-up to ensure issues identified result in timely countermeasures

Lean Learning & Support

* Assist with implementation of Lean tools such as 5S, visual controls, standardized work, and waste identification.

* Support CI Manager in conducting value stream mapping, job instruction development, and workplace organization tasks.

* Participate in Kaizen events, helping with preparation, facilitation support, and follow‑up documentation.

Data Collection & Analysis

* Gather process data on cycle times, downtime, quality metrics, and workflow patterns.

* Assist in updating Daily Management System (DMS) boards and tracking improvement metrics.

* Help measure progress of implemented improvements and identify further opportunities.

On‑Site Engagement

* Spend the majority of time on the production floor (the gemba), engaging with team leads, operators, and maintenance teams to understand workflows and improvement needs.

* Assist with organizing CI materials, visual boards, and training supplies.

Qualifications

* Currently pursuing a degree in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, Manufacturing Technology, Business/Lean Management, or related field.
