Job Description

Executive Director of Maintenance and Operations

Reports To: Division Superintendent

FLSA Status: Exempt

Classification: Administrative Scale – 260 days per year, 8 hours per day.

Summary: The Executive Director of Maintenance and Operations plans, directs, coordinates and oversees all functions pertaining to the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the facilities and grounds of all ACPS schools and departments. The prime concern is to ensure safety, cleanliness, and properly functioning systems to optimize and support instruction and student learning.

Qualifications
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited college or university.
  • Master’s Degree (M.Ed.) with endorsement in School Administration or other related field and/or applicable technical certifications, preferred.
  • At least five years of successful experience in school administration and/or maintenance supervision, preferred.
  • Demonstrates the professional, leadership, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, parents, school personnel, School Board, general contractors, architects, engineers, and members of the community.
  • Must be knowledgeable of safety standards, laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to school facilities and operations.
  • Demonstrates aptitude and ability for successfully performing the essential functions and responsibilities listed below.
Preferred Experience s

Supervision of personnel; school construction and renovation; adherence to Virginia Code required inspections and safety audits; automated systems and programs (including HVAC); custodial training; energy management; preventive maintenance and equipment repair; inventory control; cost accounting, budgeting and record keeping; and preparation and execution of school facility bid specifications and contracts.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Consults with division level administration regarding school and campus safety and collaborates with the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office on required safety audits.
  • Evaluates school buildings and grounds to ensure safety, timely repair, preventive maintenance, adequate air quality and energy conservation.
  • Reports to schools when emergencies arise and leads response efforts within areas of responsibility.
  • Plans, develops, and organizes the school division’s comprehensive energy management program.
  • Assists the School Board and Superintendent in developing school division’s maintenance, operations, and capital improvement budgets.
  • Develop and forecast maintenance department budget requirements and administer the expenditure of funds as allocated.
  • Maintain cost accounting records by compiling budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Maintain current inventory of supplies and parts.
  • Assumes responsibility for the training and certification of all employees under supervision.
  • Serves as a member of the school division’s Safety Committee.
  • Responds to after‑hours emergency calls, as needed.
  • Leads and assists school construction and renovation.
  • Responsible for implementing the school division’s asbestos management program and keeps current of government regulations pertaining to school building maintenance and operations.
  • Coordinates and implements work orders for school building maintenance.
  • Negotiates school division maintenance and building service contracts with outside vendors.
  • Provides in‑service training for maintenance and custodial workers.
  • Supervise and evaluate all ACPS Maintenance Department employees.
  • Assists school level administration with the hiring and supervision of the custodial program.
  • Comply with applicable personnel policies.
  • Provides for appropriate fiscal management, according to law and policy, of all allocated funds assigned.
