The starting rate for this position is: $73,174.40 - $, DOQ
This position is open until filled and may close at any time. This position will sometimes be subject to be on-call after hours to respond to emergencies.
This role requires strong leadership, technical, and administrative skills, as well as the ability to handle a wide range of responsibilities to ensure the airport’s maintenance functions operate smoothly. The Airport Maintenance Supervisor is a hands‑on working supervisory position with responsibilities related to the supervision and management of airport maintenance, including:
Staff SupervisionDirects, evaluates, and supports airport maintenance personnel, schedules and oversees work, reviews and approves timesheets, handles hiring, training, employee relations, appraisals, and discipline.
Technical ExpertiseOversees troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of airport systems like navigational aids, lighting, HVAC, and other mechanical systems.
Facility MaintenanceSupervises building maintenance program:
Develops and oversees preventative maintenance schedules for air conditioning units, elevators, plumbing, electrical, and fire alarm systems, and maintains airport control tower.
Oversees the maintenance of runways, taxiways, grounds, including managing landscaping and pesticide programs.
Inspections and ComplianceConducts maintenance inspections of airfield systems, ensuring compliance with FAA and Virginia Department of Aviation regulations, and maintaining logs for inspection.
Documentation and ReportingPrepares maintenance logs, bid specifications, and blueprints, issues NOTAMs, maintains parts inventory, and generates reports for management and regulatory bodies.
Vendor and Contractor ManagementCoordinates with external vendors and contractors for various maintenance activities and projects.
Budget and PlanningAssists in budget preparation for maintenance operations, monitors expenditures, and prepares for future projects, ensuring budget alignment.
Safety ComplianceLeads safety meetings, ensures OSHA compliance, and supports aircraft recovery operations during emergencies.
Communication and CollaborationLiaises with airport directors, staff, tenants, FAA controllers, contractors, and other stakeholders. Prepares and presents progress reports and presentations and participates in committees and councils.
Emergency ResponseResponds to emergencies such as aircraft accidents, hazardous spills, or airfield power outages.
- High school diploma
- Five years’ experience in general equipment and building maintenance and repairs, including maintenance supervisory experience. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Experience with radio communications with FAA Air Traffic Control (ATC), issuing Notice to Airman (NOTAMS) and troubleshooting Airfield Lighting Systems is desirable.
Must possess and maintain a valid Virginia Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
Must have successfully completed required courses and certifications such as CFC Refrigeration certification, and Pesticide Technician certification or take and pass the course when offered by the City; may be required to possess additional certification(s) as deemed necessary by the City.
Must be able to pass a TSA Criminal Background Check in accordance with TSR Part 1542 to acquire and maintain an airport security badge. A post‑offer, pre‑employment background check, DMV check, physical and drug test are required for the selected incumbent.
