JOB SUMMARY

Position: Deputy Sheriff / Patrol (Certified | Entry-Level)

The King and Queen County Sheriff’s Office (KQCSO) is a full-service law enforcement agency serving the residents of King and Queen County, Virginia. The Sheriff’s Office is committed to professionalism, accountability, and public service while maintaining strong relationships with the community it serves.

Under the general supervision of a Sergeant or Captain, Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for protecting life and property, enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and King and Queen County, preventing crime, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, conducting investigations, and maintaining positive relationships with residents and visitors. This position requires sound judgment, professionalism, integrity, and the ability to perform effectively in routine, high-risk, and high-stress environments.

This posting is intended for Virginia-certified law enforcement officers and qualified candidates eligible to obtain required Virginia law enforcement certifications within prescribed time frames.

The Sheriff’s Office provides required duty equipment and a take-home vehicle, subject to agency policy.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSMinimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 20 years and 6 months

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Law enforcement certification required within one (1) year of employment

  • Court Security / Civil Process certification required within one (1) year of employment

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in dangerous or unusual situations

  • Ability to work under stressful and high-risk conditions

  • Good moral character and suitable background for law enforcement service

Essential Functions

Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Patrol assigned areas by marked patrol vehicle to deter and detect criminal activity

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service

  • Enforce felony and misdemeanor laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and King and Queen County

  • Conduct criminal investigations, interviews, and follow-up inquiries

  • Apprehend, arrest, and detain suspects in accordance with law and policy

  • Serve warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other civil or criminal documents

  • Prepare detailed reports, documentation, and court testimony

  • Maintain custody, transport prisoners, and safeguard evidence

  • Provide first aid and emergency assistance as needed

  • Assist motorists and members of the public

  • Conduct security checks of residential and commercial properties

  • Maintain weapons, equipment, and professional appearance

  • Participate in training, shift briefings, and required certifications

  • Perform special assignments or projects as directed by the Sheriff

Deputy Sheriffs must demonstrate strong knowledge of Virginia criminal law, departmental policies, and law enforcement procedures; proficiency with report writing and computer systems; sound decision-making under pressure; and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Essential employees may be required to work during declared or undeclared emergencies.

PROCESSING & SELECTION

Applicants must successfully complete:

  • Comprehensive background investigation

  • Conditional offer of employment based on successful completion of:

    • Drug screening

    • Polygraph examination

    • Psychological evaluation

    • Physical fitness
