OverviewJoin our team at VCU Tappahannock Hospital, where we are dedicated to delivering exceptional healthcare to our community and neighboring counties. Key Responsibilities- Set up sterile field and gather supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used.
- Pass instruments to surgeons during surgical procedures.
- Perform count procedures per policy during surgical cases.
- Function under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Tech in Surgery‑Certified (TS‑C), or Certified Operating Room and Surgical Technician (CORST) preferred.
- Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Certification.
- Must achieve CST, TS‑C, or CORST certification within 24 months of hire.
- 0‑2 years of experience as a surgical technologist required.
- Experience working in an acute care setting as a nursing assistant or aide (if no surgical technologist experience).
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program, military training program, Licensed Practical Nursing Program, or Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program (RN Interns Only).
- Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with employee’s specific Nurse Manager/Clinical Coordinator.
- Schedules may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements.
- Takes call for routine cases after completing probationary period.
- Physical:
Lifting 50‑100 lbs.; exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances. - Activities:
Prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, other), reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive), repetitive motion. - Mental/Sensory:
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking. - Emotional:
Fast‑paced environment, steady pace, able to handle multiple priorities, frequent intense customer interactions, noisy environment, adapt to frequent change.
