Position: Advanced Practice Provider (O-5 Billet) Supervisory
Location: Bowling Green

Overview

The Supervisory Advanced Practice Provider oversees Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners at the IHSC facility, training, and schedules. Provides direct detainee care, performs evaluations, and prescribes medications. Requires licensure, certification, and 6+ years clinical experience. The Supervisory APP reports directly to the facility Clinical Director. This position is only open to current USPHS officers. USPHS Call to Active Duty (CAD) candidates are not eligible for this position.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as the direct supervisor and rater to federal Advanced Practice Providers (APP) to include both Physician Assistants and/or Nurse Practitioners at IHSC sites.
  • Provides leadership and oversight of APP onboarding and training.
  • Participates in national APP training initiatives as required.
  • Assist as required in the credentialing and privileging processes.
  • Oversees the APP peer review processes.
  • Augments clinical leadership in collaboration with the clinical director.
  • Coordinates APP work schedule at the IHSC sites.
  • Coordinates regular on-site APP meetings and in-service training as required.
  • Serves as Acting Regional APP or Acting Chief APP as required.
  • Provides direct care to detainees via scheduled appointments, emergency or urgent care visits.
  • Works within and performs functions as outlined in the IHSC Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Collaborative Practice and Prescriptive Authority Agreement (CP/PAA).
  • Consults with the physician/Clinical Director for complex medical and/or psychiatric patients as required by IHSC policy.
  • Provides infirmary care including admission, discharge, and daily rounds for detainees requiring higher levels of medical care or monitoring.
  • Performs comprehensive history and physical evaluations, behavioral health care, and minor outpatient surgical procedures for detainees as required by IHSC policy.
  • Applies knowledge of drugs and therapeutics when prescribing medication.
  • Coordinates health care needs of detainees including referrals to off-site consultants.
  • Interprets diagnostic and laboratory results; interprets Tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) and diagnostic studies.
  • Manages Direct Observation Therapy (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). treatment of active or latent tuberculosis.
  • Takes appropriate infection control actions in accordance with IHSC policy and guidance; adheres to universal precautions and proper sharps disposal.
  • May serve as medical escort of detainees as needed, for domestic/overseas travel.
  • Utilizes and documents interpretation and/or translation and/or assisted communication services as needed to ensure ability to communicate with detainees or others who are LEP or have a disability.
  • Provides relevant patient health education to detainees verbally and/or with handouts.
  • Documents detainee care visits in the required health record in compliance with IHSC policy and guidance.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and confidentiality of medical records.
  • Maintains basic readiness for duty and current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Maintains clinical professional skills via continuing education opportunities.
  • Completes all training as required/assigned.
  • Maintains flexibility and adaptability to sudden changes in schedules and work requirements.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Qualifications

Physician Assistant — Requires unrestricted PA license, NCCPA certification, and graduation from an ARC-PA accredited PA program. PA-C certification by NCCPA.

Nurse Practitioner — Requires unrestricted NP license, national board certification (AANP or ANCC), current NP licensure in the appropriate jurisdiction, and a graduate degree in an approved NP program. Knowledge of the Nurse Practice Act for the licensing state and ongoing currency in licensure and DEA registration to prescribe controlled medications.

Experience and Leadership — More than six years of full-time clinical experience as a PA or NP or approval of the IHSC Chief Advanced Practice Provider; team lead or supervisory experience of more than two years.

Preferred — IHSC experience, correctional healthcare familiarity, CCHP certification, knowledge of IHSC policies, NCCHC and PBNDS, public health preparedness, infection…
