Overview
The Medical Technologist (MT) works under the direction of the supervisor/manager in the area of responsibility and/or Director of the Laboratory. Performs technical procedures in the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, Point of Care Testing, Urinalysis and Microbiology according to established protocols and standard operating procedures. The MT follows all quality control and quality assurance guidelines, maintains accurate performance review and documentation, and performs routine maintenance of departmental equipment with inventory control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.
Participates in proficiency testing and maintains readiness to meet accreditation standards from CAP, DNV, State, OSHA, AABB, CLIA, etc. Assists in training new and existing personnel as well as students. Performs lead technologist responsibilities in the absence of an on-site supervisor when designated. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies and procedures; maintains a professional demeanor and positive attitude. May perform specimen collection, specimen processing and phlebotomy as applicable.

- Performs technical procedures in areas such as Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Blood Bank, Point of Care Testing, Urinalysis and Microbiology. Facilitates positive customer service throughout the department/facility. Responds timely to customer needs.
- Recognizes, responds and communicates collaboratively with physicians regarding variances in laboratory operations and patient data. Builds collaborative professional relationships with a multi-disciplinary team to support patient care needs.
- Follows all quality control and quality assurance guidelines. Performs routine maintenance of departmental equipment and procedures including inventory control, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting. Understands the technology systems necessary for efficient department operations and takes responsibility for equipment, instrumentation and technology to maintain and ensure functionality.
- Completes accurate testing to ensure quality patient care, including preanalytic, analytic and postanalytic phases.
- Assists in staff and student training.
- Complies with the laboratory QA/QI program. Performs preventative maintenance, quality controls and troubleshoots on laboratory equipment per SOPs to ensure quality results. Ensures department maintains accreditation from CAP, DNV and other applicable accrediting agencies. May include validation testing, proficiency samples, preventive maintenance, QC documentation, temperature checks and method comparisons.
- Complies with RHS policies, procedures and regulatory requirements that support the National Patient Safety Goals and Quality Initiatives. Recognizes and reports variances and provides resolutions. Uses appropriate protective equipment, body mechanics and follows safety guidelines; identifies and acts to resolve variances or suspected non-compliance to management.
- Bachelors Degree, Medical Lab Technology/Clinical Lab Science or Related (Required)
- 2 years Clinical Lab experience (Preferred)
- Medical Technologist (MT) – The ASCP Board of Certification (BOC) Clinical Laboratory Scientist / Medical Technologist (ASCP or AMT) Upon Hire (Required)
- Medical Lab Scientist (MLS) – American Medical Technologists (AMT) (ASCP or AMT) Upon Hire (Required)
