The Opportunity

This position is located in Altavista, VA in the Abbott Nutrition division. Abbott Nutrition develops science‑based nutrition products for people of all ages, from helping babies and children grow to keeping adults strong and active. Millions of people worldwide rely on leading brands such as Similac®, Pedia Sure®, Pedialyte®, Ensure®, and Glucerna® to meet their nutritional needs.

What you’ll work on
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable business policies, laws, and regulations, including U.S. FDA, OSHA, GMP, EPA and other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, and processes; interface with internal and external regulatory agencies, community organisations, and division/corporate entities related to EHS&S.
  • Determine the site EHS&S goals, strategy, and objectives in conjunction with division and corporate initiatives; execute plans through functional direct and indirect reports while providing leadership, coaching and direction; develop plans for continuous improvement that benefit operations and overall effectiveness of site safety.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all environmental, health, safety and security standards, including local and state regulatory requirements; serve as the subject‑matter expert at all levels of the site.
  • Develop and implement robust site procedures, practices, and guidelines through collaboration with site leadership and division EHS; implement technical and management standards and ensure timely emergency response systems, policies and procedures are in place and up to date.
  • Lead the safety metrics for the site—environmental metrics, inspections, proactive/reactive data—and use data to identify and reduce risks; assist in all aspects of incident investigation, root‑cause analysis, and implementation of preventive actions.
  • Oversee the site Security team and related programs to ensure risk mitigation and compliance; ensure compliance with the FDA Intentional Adulteration Rule as owner of the site’s Food Defense Plan.
  • Attract, develop and retain a diverse qualified staff through effective training, succession planning strategies and ongoing performance feedback; drive a culture of engagement and inclusivity.
  • Manage the financial performance of the department budget.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Engineering.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of people‑leadership experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA 40‑hour Training Certification.
  • Hazardous Material Transportation (HAZWOPER) certification.
