Dewberry is currently seeking a Health and Safety Intern to join our Fairfax, VA office for Summer 2026 to assist the HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Department with a variety of projects and initiatives designed to drive continuous improvement through all facets of Dewberry's Health, Safety and Environment Program. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented individual to gain valuable experience and learn alongside experienced HSE professionals.

The Safety Intern will report directly to the Corporate Director of HSE and partner with HSE Managers.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct office and field safety inspections and assist with documenting observations and corrective actions
  • Participate in hazard identification and risk assessments
  • Assist in the development and review of safety programs, procedures, and training materials
  • Support incident reporting and investigations, including root cause analysis and follow-up actions
  • Collect and analyze safety‑related data to calculate performance metrics and identify trends
  • Participate in safety training, new hire onboarding, and safety committees
  • Assist with development of safety toolbox talks and Activity Hazard Analyses (and/or Job Hazard Analysis)
  • Contribute to special EHS and operational projects as assigned
Required Skills & Required Experience
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Training, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field
  • Seeking a career in the occupational safety, industrial hygiene, risk, or training field.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to work in both office and field environments
  • Professional, collaborative mindset aligned with Dewberry's culture of integrity and excellence

Summer Intern Program

During the summer intern program, interns gain hands‑on project experience, develop technical skills, and put their classroom knowledge into action. Our interns are assigned meaningful work and are given the opportunity to work on projects similar to what they would be engaging with as a full‑time employee.

Our interns get the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops and events, including:

  • Networking opportunities to meet other interns, staff, and senior leaders across the business.
  • Learning about our services, projects, and clients.
  • Professional development workshops, including a career planning workshop and a DiSC assessment to learn more about themselves and how to work effectively with others.
  • Summer-long group project where interns work alongside firm leaders to address issues that will impact our future strategy.
