Position Summary:
Position is responsible for cataloging and processing library materials, assisting patrons and school staff, checking books in and out of the library, maintaining audio/visual equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Essential Functions- Manage the library/media center program consistent with established guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Maintain budget and accurate records and produce/submit reports in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with teachers to provide integrated SOL-based instruction that actively involves the students.
- Assist teachers and students in research and technology.
- Teach information literacy and research skills.
- Collaborate with teachers for curriculum planning.
- Select, acquire, catalog, and process age-appropriate books, electronic, and audiovisual resources that support the curriculum goals and the Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Promote lifelong learning and general literacy through reading and literature appreciation.
- Maintain accurate up-to-date inventory of equipment and materials.
- Participate in professional development and provide professional leadership to colleagues.
- Coordinate library/media center events (book fairs, etc.).
- Train co-workers in proper use of equipment circulated by the library media center.
- Follow recommended cataloging and processing procedures.
- Maintain an attractive, inviting media center where information is organized and accessible and the climate is conducive to learning.
- Communicate with parents.
- Promote the ethical and legal use of resources.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of children/young adult literature and materials, and current trends in school library media services.
- Knowledge of computer applications and technology for schools and school library media centers.
- Ability to work with children.
- Strong teaching, research, organizational, communication, and program management skills.
- Ability to multitask and work to a deadline.
- Ability to maintain standards of behavior.
- The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents.
Education and Experience
- A valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching License.
- Endorsement in School Library Media PreK-12 from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in written form.
- Regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions.
- Requires the ability to bend and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Frequently requires walking and occasionally requires standing, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing, pulling and lifting.
- Work has standard vision requirements; visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts.
- Must possess good eye-hand coordination for minor repair of equipment and books.
