Job Description

Title:

Automotive Instructor

General Definition of Work:
The Automotive Instructor provides classroom and hands-on instruction aligned with the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Career and Technical Education competencies for the Automotive Technology—Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) program. The instructor teaches foundational and advanced automotive service skills including safety practices, engine repair, electrical systems, brakes, steering and suspension, heating and air conditioning, and general vehicle maintenance. The position prepares students for industry-recognized credentials such as ASE Entry-Level Certifications through high-quality instruction, demonstration, and supervised shop activities.

Work involves developing lesson plans, maintaining a safe and effective instructional environment, overseeing tools and shop equipment, assessing student learning, and ensuring compliance with state and local CTE program requirements. The Automotive Instructor collaborates with administrators, industry partners, and the CTE department to support career readiness, implement work-based learning experiences, and maintain program alignment with current industry standards. Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential

Functions
  • Provide instruction based on VDOE CTE competencies for the Automotive MLR program.
  • Prepare engaging lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on lab activities aligned with ASE standards and current automotive industry practices.
  • Teach and enforce all shop and equipment safety procedures consistent with OSHA and industry expectations.
  • Supervise students in the operation of tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and shop machinery.
  • Prepare students for ASE Entry-Level certifications, workplace readiness skills, and other VDOE-approved industry credentials.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, grades, credential attainment, and attendance.
  • Ensure the automotive lab is clean, organized, well-maintained, and compliant with safety regulations.
  • Manage inventory of tools, supplies, and materials; coordinate repairs and submit supply requests.
  • Collaborate with CTE leadership to support program evaluation, improvement, and compliance with VDOE requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, colleagues, and administrators.
  • Support work-based learning opportunities such as job shadowing, internships, and industry engagement.
  • Maintain professional knowledge through industry training, continuing education, and certification updates.
  • Participate in school functions, professional development, IEP meetings, and CTE program reviews as required.
  • Knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostic procedures, and current industry repair standards.
  • Understanding of the Maintenance & Light Repair curriculum and ASE Entry-Level Certification requirements.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate and supervise the use of automotive tools, lifts, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Strong classroom management and instructional planning skills.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Commitment to student career development and industry-aligned instruction.
Education and Job Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Industry experience in automotive repair and servicing.
  • ASE Certifications (A-series and/or ASE Entry-Level).
  • Prior teaching, training, or mentoring experience.
  • Experience in a dealership or professional repair facility.
  • Experience with the VDOE MLR curriculum framework.
  • Eligibility for or possession of a Virginia CTE License in Automotive Technology (Teaching Endorsement 8610).
