Salary: $51,376 – $74,576 (Commensurate with Experience)

Position Purpose

This position provides individual, small-group, and large-group instruction to students based on children’s individual developmental levels; ages 2–5 years old. The role works in collaboration with parents to assist children in reaching their full potential, develops and implements effective instructional practices based on the needs identified in students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and monitors the students’ progress. The teacher promotes a collaborative relationship with school staff and parents that fosters inclusive practices.

Functions
  • Assume the responsibilities of a special education teacher.
  • Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), plan curriculum, and prepare individualized lesson plans and instructional materials aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and students’ learning styles and needs.
  • Instruct students in all areas specified by the IEP.
  • Implement a variety of effective teaching strategies and techniques (hands‑on, group work, lecture, etc.) to present instructional content.
  • Plan, integrate, and utilize technology for classroom instruction.
  • Use assistive technology and specialized equipment.
  • Increase student motivation, provide consistent reinforcement, conduct continuous assessment of functional levels, and give continuous feedback to all students.
  • Develop and implement a plan for managing classroom behaviors in accordance with the IEP, using positive behavioral supports.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment process.
  • Administer, interpret, and report standardized test results to evaluate progress and determine eligibility for special education.
  • Participate in staff, department, and special education committee meetings and training as required.
  • Maintain a system of record keeping and data collection following required procedures as outlined in the Special Education Procedural Guidance Manual.
  • Assist children with proper health training and self‑help activities (eating, dressing, personal hygiene).
  • Participate in specialized staff development activities to improve job‑related skills and apply best practices with students with disabilities.
  • Plan and deliver specialized instruction within the early childhood special education classroom; collaborate with related service providers to assess program effectiveness, recommend and implement instructional strategies, and ensure required accommodations and/or modifications.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher assistants and other staff.
  • Plan, schedule, implement, and supervise the daily program, emphasizing appropriate developmental experiences for preschool children.
  • Supervise the outdoor and indoor play areas to ensure children’s safety.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating field trips that extend educational experiences.
  • Make regular home visits, hold parent‑teacher conferences, and maintain open communication with parents.
  • Eat breakfast and lunch with children, encouraging conversation and promoting a pleasant atmosphere during meal periods.
  • Know and implement NAEYC best‑practice guidelines, Virginia learning and development standards; assist other staff with these standards.
  • Assure that equipment and materials are accessible, appropriate, and in good condition; report any unsafe conditions to the Administrative Coordinator, Supervisor, and building principal.
  • Participate in the recruitment, screening, and enrollment of all eligible children.
  • Maintain an inventory of classroom materials and assist in ordering appropriate supplies and equipment.
  • Perform additional tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned or delegated by school administration.
