General Purpose

Under the supervision of the School Principal, this position will provide assistance as either a School Crossing Guard and/or Cafeteria Host with shared responsibilities for ensuring the safety and welfare of students during classroom and non‑classroom activities, minimizing the frequency and severity of harmful incidents, and communicating observations and incidents that may impact students, school personnel, and visitors.

The School Crossing Guard assists in controlling vehicular and pedestrian traffic at an assigned location for a prescribed period of time to ensure safety of school children and maintain orderly traffic flow. The Cafeteria Host monitors student behavior and facilitates orderly progression of students through the cafeteria and cleanup during lunch.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities Crossing Guard Duties
  • Give clear, concise hand signals to stop vehicular and pedestrian traffic until all pedestrians have crossed.
  • Ensure signals are understood and obeyed before moving traffic.
  • Note any present or potential traffic hazards and report them to the Sheriff’s Office promptly.
  • Report vehicle code violations and write reports as necessary.
  • Attend required training sessions/meetings.
  • Enforce school rules and regulations.
  • Report students or pedestrians who do not adhere to safe street crossing procedures to supervisor.
Cafeteria Host Duties
  • Assist orderly progression of students through cafeteria lines and seating at appropriate tables.
  • Monitor student behavior.
  • Facilitate student movement in an orderly manner.
  • Provide assistance with lunches (opening milk cartons, collecting utensils, etc.).
  • Clean spills and dropped food to maintain safety.
  • Assist with cleaning tables and sweeping floors after lunch period.
Safety Monitor Duties
  • Ensure students, employees, and visitors are aware of district safety policies and consequences of violations.
  • Report incidents, survey student behavior, and visually scan areas to maintain compliance and a positive environment.
  • Escort students, assigned personnel, or guests to offices or special locations.
  • Provide administrative visibility and protection by monitoring facilities and directing outsiders.
  • Monitor student behavior in various settings during and between assigned periods and check facilities consistently for compliance.

Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must be certified by the Sheriff’s Office to conduct Crossing Guard duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge
  • Basic safety rules for school buildings.
  • Basic safe driving rules and procedures for Crossing Guards.
  • Basic food safety guidelines for Cafeteria Hosts.
  • Techniques for communicating with children and adults.
  • English and grammar usage.
  • Current Virginia traffic laws and emergency procedures.
Skills
  • Complete Handle with Care Training.
  • Complete First Aid/CPR/AED Training.
  • For Crossing Guard:
    Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic through arm and hand signals, use hand‑held stop sign, reflective vest, cones, whistle, gloves, and communication equipment, judge traffic flow, speed, and direction of travel, group pedestrians logically.
  • For Cafeteria Host:
    Child development and behavior management techniques; supervise children in absence of supervisor.
