HHMI is focused on supporting and moving science forward in a variety of different ways ranging from conducting basic biomedical research, empowering educators, inspiring students, developing the next generation of scientists – even stretching into film and media production. Our Headquarters is in the greater Washington, DC metro area and is home to over 300 employees with expertise in investments, communications, digital production, biomedical sciences, and everything in between.

Summary

As the Intern, Marketing and Internal Communications, you will support a portfolio of work that encompasses the development and production of content for various internal communications channels and our external‑facing employee ambassador social media program. Our internal communications channels reach nearly 4,000 employees and contractors, and our employee ambassador social media program reaches approximately 4 million people per year.

This internship’s work is highly collaborative and requires someone who is confident, creative, adaptable, able to handle change, discreet, and organized. In all this work, a respect for and interest in our employees is paramount. You should be proactive in your approach to work and enthusiastic about gaining hands‑on experience in a real‑world work environment.

This is a full‑time (40 hours/week) hybrid internship that will report to our Headquarters office in Chevy Chase, MD three days per week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) and work remotely two days per week (Mondays and Fridays).

If selected for an opportunity, interns are responsible for securing their own housing for the duration of the internship (12 weeks during the summer months).

  • This position will be compensated at a rate of $17.65-$20.00/hour depending on candidate education level, skills, and experience.
What you’ll do
  • Learn about and assist with communications content development, production, and management for internal channels, including our intranet and our external‑facing employee ambassador social media program.
  • Organize files on team SharePoint site and support the management of digital assets.
  • Learn how to develop engaging stories.
  • Attend relevant events and write short article summaries.
  • Have the opportunity to learn SharePoint (intranet) and Hootsuite (social media management), and/or strengthen your already existing skills.
What you bring
  • Current enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in communications, English, journalism, political science, graphic design, or a closely related area of study.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is required.
  • Previous experience with Canva is preferred.
  • Any experience with Adobe Creative Suite or another graphic design tool would be a plus.
  • Any experience with SharePoint and/or Hootsuite would be a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong initiative, self‑motivation, sense of maturity, and capacity for creative problem‑solving.
  • Strong organizational, teamwork, analytical, and time management skills.
  • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to identify and work toward outcomes with an approach that prioritizes both quality and creativity.
