Equipment Operator

W‑L Construction and Paving, part of the CRH family, is one of southwest Virginia’s largest grading contractors and the largest paving contractor in the area. We employ more than 250 seasonal employees and perform all aspects of roadway construction, including grading, paving, stone, concrete, and utilities.

Position will be based out of our Chilhowie, VA office; however, work will also be conducted in and around Tennessee.

As a crew member, you will operate various types of equipment around the job site area.

• Partner with employees as instructed by foreman to ensure daily schedules are met.
• Maintain attendance according to company attendance policy to ensure crew efficiency.
• Operate equipment under temperature extremes for 8‑12 hour shifts.
• Assist or perform other positions as needed for job completion.
• Maintain a courteous and professional manner with co‑workers, customers, and the general public.
• Adapt to last‑minute schedule changes, location changes, and overtime requirements; may work out of town, across counties or states; night shift may be required.
• Excavate designated areas with attention to detail and craftsmanship.
• Operate off‑road truck to specifications.
• Operate heavy equipment on rough grade work or paving within the job site area.
• Follow safety guidelines and company policies, and obey instructions of supervisor or facility manager.

• Physical ability to excavate/operate equipment and work extended hours under temperature extremes.
• Initiative to perform/assist with other positions for job completion.
• Positive attitude and teamwork skills.
• Flexibility with schedule, location, overtime, and night shift.
• Attention to detail and craftsmanship in excavation tasks.
• Experience operating heavy equipment on rough grade work or paving.
• Strong safety record and willingness to follow all safety guidelines.
• Valid driver’s license.

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
• Operator experience preferred.
