General Laborer - Marion, VA
Caton Construction Group is a Heavy/Highway Civil & General Construction company with offices in Troy, VA & Cary, NC. We are currently seeking a General Laborer for our roadway/bridge project in Marion, VA (Smith County).
STARTING PAY is negotiable and based on skills and experience.
Job SummaryThe construction laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at general building and highway/heavy construction projects. The position may operate a variety of hand and power tools and may clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, and remove waste materials. The position may assist other craft workers.
Responsibilities- Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in general or heavy/highway construction projects; performs manual work.
- Shovels bituminous concrete (asphalt) into construction areas.
- Excavates and fills trenches and ditches.
- Maintains a clean job site: picks up all tools and equipment and secures job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
- Performs materials handling and storage.
- Loads and unloads trucks, and hauls and hoists materials.
- Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed.
- Provides assistance to Foremen and Supervisors as needed, mixing, pouring and spreading materials, erecting and stripping form work.
- Laborers may also spend time with traffic control and flagging.
- Laborers operate a variety of equipment and must adhere to company safety procedures and practices at all times.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Position Type & Expected HoursThis is a full‑time position. Normal days and hours of work are Monday‑Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with time provided for lunch; hours may vary. Work may be local or out of town, which may require overnight stays. Long hours and weekend work may be required.
Travel & DrivingTravel is primarily local during the business day, although some out‑of‑area and overnight travel may be expected. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid state driver’s license before employment.
RequiredEducation and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- 2+ years of heavy highway experience (roads, highways, bridges, DOT, or site work project experience).
- Valid CDL a plus.
- OSHA 10‑hour training or flagger certification a plus.
