Heavy Equipment Operator

Heavy Equipment Operator positions are open in the Waste Management Division of the City hombres. The role will involve operating heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

• Operate bulldozers, excavators, landfill compactor, off road dirt trucks, material reduction grinders, large mowing equipment on slopes, and other equipment in sanitari landfill maintenance and clearing operations.
• Service and make minor repairs and/or adjustments on equipment to prevent major breakdowns.
• Supervise and train subordinate equipment operators to increase their skills and proficiency.
• Perform other job duties that may be required or less than those described, as determined by the supervisor based on current workloads and department needs.
• Safely and proficiently operate assigned equipment.
• Thoroughly perform preventive maintenance and practice accident prevention; work independently within standard procedures and adapt to new or unusual circumstances.

Pre-employment physical is required.

Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (VA or NC).

Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus.

All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), in response to short‑term department needs, or for city‑wide emergencies.

CDL Hiring Bonus: The $4,000 CDL (Class A or

B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.

• $1,000 with first paycheck
• $1,000 with first pay period following six‑month interim evaluation (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
• $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
