Job Duties:
The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking to hire an experienced Family Service Assistant (FSA). This candidate will provide administrative, clerical and direct service support to internal staff as well as children and families involved with Child Welfare. FSAs assist with scheduling and supervising of family time visitation, provide transportation to children and families, supervise children, conduct safety home visits, monthly visits and well-child visits, note taking and Family Partnership scribe duties, provide notary services for families as well as other duties as needed to provide support to staff and the families served.
Duties:
- Engage clients in the community in a variety of settings to include family homes, schools, and hospitals.
- Document client contacts and interaction in a variety of digital case management applications
- Consult with supervisory team members, and city attorneys regarding the safety, wellbeing, and permanency of children.
- Assess child safety and risk utilizing a variety of structured decision-making tools, interviews, and observations.
- Family time/visitation supervision, observation, coaching, and support.
- Well child direct face-to-face contact
- Home safety/environment checks
- Transportation to and from medical appointments, court appearances, scheduled
appointments, visitations, etc. for child welfare clients. - School transports
- Supervision of minor children during case planning meetings, court appearances, therapy appointments.
- Shopping for foster children in non-foster home settings

- Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS:
Requires any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in a human services field (social work, guidance and counseling, family and child development, psychology or sociology) utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina driver's license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV driver's license eligibility requirements.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
