Overview

Duties

Responsibilities The duties reflect the responsibilities for Consumer Safety Inspector positions with the FSIS. This section outlines typical duties, experience, and qualification expectations as defined for the GS-levels described below. The responsibilities are described to align with the CSI role and related activities in a regulated food safety environment.

Qualifications

You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education. Specialized experience includes knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption. Examples of relevant experience include roles such as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar positions with responsibility for sampling, quality control and sanitation in a food manufacturing or production environment.

  • GS-05 level – At least 52 weeks of qualifying experience that provided knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities and substances (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or other food or beverages for human consumption) or other ingestible substances (e.g., pharmaceuticals). Your resume should show examples such as: applying proper sampling techniques and/or performing field tests; documenting abnormalities and recommending corrective actions;

    and communicating findings to others. Experience may be in roles such as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or other related positions.
  • GS-07 level – In addition to GS-05, at least one year of specialized experience performing standard and recurrent duties on an independent basis, including routine, standard assignments related to the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities and ingestibles.
  • GS-08 level – At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, including work with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, basic SSOP and HACCP principles, basic mathematics and statistics for testing and sampling, and ability to reach and interpret conclusions.
  • GS-09 level – At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-08, including more independent duties such as recommending refusal of exports and providing temporary coverage at locations outside the official duty station. Volunteer experience is credited and considered toward qualifications where appropriate.
