Summary:
The Registered Nurse (RN) performs competent nursing care guided by the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN adheres to professional standards encompassing ethics, communication, collaboration, leadership, and evidence-based practice, possessing the clinical knowledge to meet specific clinical area requirements.
Department Overview:
The ICU at Sentara Leigh Hospital, a recipient of the AACN Gold Beacon Award, has 20 licensed beds with an average daily census of 18. Staffing ratios typically range from 1:1 to 1:3, with 1:2 being common.
ICU RNs require broad knowledge and skills to provide safe, critical care. Ongoing education, skill validation, and new skill acquisition are supported by an experienced ICU CNS. Orientation lasts 2-14 weeks based on experience. New graduate RNs participate in the Vizient AACN Nurse Residency Program and AACN's Critical Care Orientation online. Experienced RNs are encouraged to pursue critical care certification with support.
Our ICU team is supported by an interdisciplinary care team including respiratory, physical, speech, and occupational therapists, along with available interpreter, nutrition, palliative, chaplaincy, and ethical services. Onsite and eICU intensivists provide 24/7 coverage, with daily interdisciplinary rounds led by physicians and nurses for continuity and education.
Qualifications:
- Degree or Diploma in Nursing (required)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing or MSN (preferred)
Licensure and Certification:
- Registered Nurse License (required)
- BLS certification within 90 days of hire
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year in emergency, intermediate, intensive care, or med/surg nursing
