• The Genetic Counselor provides risk management and genetic counseling to individuals and families with increased risk of genetic conditions.
• Obtains developmental, pregnancy, and extensive family history information.
• Provides recurrence risk evaluation for single gene disease, multi-factorial conditions, chromosome abnormalities and disorders with complex inheritance.
• Counsels families in which a child has been diagnosed with a genetic disorder, regarding natural history, features/symptoms, pathology, and prognosis, and provides emotional support.
• Supplies families with literature and disease-specific support group information and other resources.
• Counsels individuals regarding adult-onset genetic disorders.
• Organizes DNA and other genetic testing for patients and extended families; reviews results with patients and families.
• When appropriate, makes referrals for additional services.
• Participates in local family support groups and attends conferences and continuing education offerings.
• Provides lectures to community groups, health care professionals, EVMS medical school students and residents.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Master’s degree in Genetics Counseling, with board certification or eligibility in Genetic Counseling; must successfully receive board certification within two attempts of taking the exam.
• Previous experience in Genetic Counseling is preferred but not required.
