Systems Engineer
General Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Coordinator of Telecommunications for the Infrastructure Team, the position is responsible for supervising and assigning the day‑to‑day work of a team. These teams design, plan, implement, and maintain the division’s computer hardware and software, data centers, cloud, telecommunications, and data networks. The role provides both hands‑on tactical management and strategic direction, overseeing problem mitigation, resource allocation, and overall project management.
Key Responsibilities- Evaluate new technology and resources for future implementation in the VBCPS.
- Present and provide technical training for staff in the Department of Technology.
- Plan and supervise special projects involving team members.
- Advise clients on the necessary technology to achieve their goals.
- Maintain awareness of changing and emerging technology through professional resources, continuing education, and in‑service programs.
- Create and maintain the enterprise repository of systems documents.
- Perform routine checks on critical systems to ensure proper operation and minimize downtime.
- Schedule personnel daily for planned systems maintenance, health monitoring, and unplanned remediation and recovery.
- Provide daily and weekly reports of enterprise system status and project progress to the coordinator.
- Contribute to annual evaluations of personnel assigned to the team.
- Verify that service‑level agreements are met and work is performed in a timely manner.
- Manage the Technical Architecture, Network Services (LAN, WAN, Internet, Intranet, Extranet & Wireless Mobility), NGFirewalls, Content Controls, End‑Point Technology, and Support systems.
- Lead the Infrastructure team in all technical aspects, providing project management for single‑system upgrades to enterprise‑wide projects.
- Oversee the analysis, design, installation, and configuration of wired and wireless networks, including those serving telecommunications and data storage, to ensure adequacy for current and future needs.
- Maintain, manage, and troubleshoot all network‑related issues.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, work under tight time constraints, organize and perform work independently, lead technical efforts, train staff on complex tasks, maintain computerized records, meet with the public effectively, and supervise the work of others.
Infrastructure KnowledgeIn-depth knowledge of a complex enterprise network infrastructure, including enterprise hardware, fiber cabling, WAN/WLAN/LAN systems with 24/7 uptime requirements.
Education and ExperienceRequired:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a technical supervisor or manager.
- Solid experience interacting with external vendors on problem identification, resolution, and account management.
- Experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting complex systems while maintaining security.
- Certifications or equivalent experience in technical areas relevant to the VBCPS environment.
- Experience in IT project management, data center infrastructure, Cisco/Fortinet firewalls, switching, call manager, Nexus, and enterprise networking (3 years each preferred).
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Good sensory skills for effective communication and interaction with employees and the public. Frequent sitting, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, grasping, repetitive motion, reaching, and driving. Occasional standing, climbing, and crawling. Moderate exposure to dust, fumes, gases, unpleasant odors, hazards such as moving vehicles, electric current, and mechanical parts. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently. Requires adherence to established work schedules.
