Mechanic Technician III

The City of Virginia Beach is hiring for a Mechanic Technician II (G22, $49,254 - $76,336) or Mechanic Technician III (G.25, $57,012 - $88,358) - depending on qualifications - to join our Fuels subdivision to inspect and test all fuel storage tanks to ensure regulatory compliance relating to fuel storage tank regulations and hazardous waste and material regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Perform maintenance and repairs to City fuel sites and associated hardware and software, including diagnosing probes, sensors, pumps, dispensers and day tanks.

* Utilize, monitor, test and troubleshoot Veeder Root (TLS) and Asset Works Fuel Focus to ensure proper connectivity and functioning to ensure conformance with departmental standards, City policies, vendor's specifications, and industry best practices for monitoring USTs.

* Assist in maintaining control of hazardous waste per federal, state, and local regulations; and follow all statutes put down by governing bodies and implement programs which assure that Fleet Management stays within the legal guidelines.

* Ensure all environmental regulations (spills, etc.) and DEQ requirements (inspections, etc.) are maintained; performs and documents weekly and monthly site/safety inspections; perform tank and line testing; coordinate major repairs with outside vendor(s); updates and maintains all chemical placards at various fuel sites; and advises Fleet Management of any safety violations, or any potential problems observed at various fuel sites.

* Communicate with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Fire Department in reference to regulations and procedures pertaining to USTs that includes but is not limited to conducting proper soil and water sampling required by the DEQ, perform fuel samplings and spill containment; perform monthly/quarterly Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) inspections; and update and follow Spill Preventative Controls and Counter Measures (SPCC) plans.

* Take immediate action once a leak has been determined and follow all guidelines set forth by the governing bodies; and work with all municipal agencies required to overcome any leaks and/or contamination.
