Primary Duties of the Geotechnical Engineer include:
  • Development and completion of geotechnical field and laboratory investigations
  • Preparation of proposals and reporting documents
  • Completion and coordination of technical analyses for design
  • Our ideal candidate will be familiar with geotechnical investigations, laboratory testing, and design activities for transportation projects including bridges, fill embankments, cut slopes, subgrades, pavements, retaining walls, and ground improvement. The candidate should be involved in communication with both internal and external clients and be comfortable with design and project team coordination to ensure the implementation of geotechnical recommendations into project documents.

    A Geotechnical Engineer’s traits include organizing, coordinating, and executing field exploration efforts, geotechnical analyses, and development of geotechnical reporting documents. The individual is expected to make decisions and recommendations that impact project direction and activities, with guidance from senior geotechnical engineers. Excellent communication skills, collaboration, task management, and direct work with senior staff are essential.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE)
    • Professional Engineer's (PE) license in the Commonwealth of VA (or ability to obtain within six months)
    • 4+ years of geotechnical consulting experience related to transportation projects
    • Experience with subsurface exploration and laboratory testing for soils and rock
    • Ability to independently prepare proposals and develop geotechnical reports
    • Experience with geotechnical design parameters, slope stability, settlement analysis, foundations, retaining walls, and pavements
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
    • Master's degree in Civil Engineering with Geotechnical emphasis (preferred)
    • Proficiency with geotechnical software such as gINT, Slope/W, APILE, LPILE, Settle3D
    • Preference for local candidates

    Required Qualifications:
    • PE or P.Eng license
    • Experience with Microsoft Office, Micro Station, or similar software
    • Experience with Geo Studio/Ensoft software for slope stability, settlement, seepage, and deep foundations
    • Experience with Bentley geotechnical data management tools (gINT, Open Ground, Leap Frog)
    • Active participation in our employee-owned culture is essential
