Job Description

WSP is initiating a search for a Lead Professional, Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team in Virginia. This role can sit in either Richmond or Virginia Beach. The position involves providing high‑level technical assistance and guidance for multi‑site and phased due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial projects. Responsibilities include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, and protection and control systems across a wide range of contexts.

Impact
  • Provide guidance with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to work sites, blueprints, GIS, substation components, and equipment specifications for procurement and pricing.
  • Coordinate, review, and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for smaller projects, ensuring compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Apply advanced electrical engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
  • Perform complex engineering work on single‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, wiring diagrams, general arrangement, substation layout, bus arrangement, grounding grids, and lightning protection.
  • Plan and incorporate future‑ready techniques, equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC panel design, and conduit/trenching strategies, ensuring safety and functionality for end‑users.
  • Review electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, grounding potentials, short‑circuit studies, protective device coordination, and substation switchyard layouts.
  • Develop and review plans, specifications, cost estimates, construction safety, and phasing plans, coordinating with owners, other disciplines, and clients.
  • Manage design and construction of electrical infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including rehabilitation, reconstruction, site development, grading, drainage, equipment layout, and safety plans.
  • Oversee cross‑functional teams, tracking budgets, hours, expenses, task completion, technical calculations, permit applications, and regulatory memos.
  • Prepare data visualizations (tables, charts, reports) for complex analysis and findings.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations to explain research, findings, concepts, and recommendations.
  • Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements, aligning with company standards.
  • Analyze field investigation data and contribute to action plans for risk mitigation.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally.
  • Collaborate with engineers, planners, and authorities on federal, state, and local projects and business development opportunities.
  • Stay current with latest electrical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Adhere to the company’s Code of Conduct and related policies, exercising responsible decision‑making regarding company resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 7 to 10 years of post‑education experience providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
  • Professional Engineer license required.
  • Proficiency with electrical engineering principles, practices, and design/build processes, including permitting.
  • Extensive knowledge of infrastructure design.
  • Competence in adjacent disciplines such as electrical engineering, P&C, SCADA, and telecom.
  • Experience in electrical infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design projects.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
