Senior Bridge Inspection Engineer
Join WSP in the U.S. as a key member of our Virginia Bridge Inspection Group.
Location:
Virginia Beach, Richmond, and Herndon, VA offices.
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Bridge Inspection Engineer. You will assist the Mid‑Atlantic District’s bridge inspection TEC Lead on a full‑time basis with business development and winning bridge inspection and repair work for VDOT and other transportation agencies.
Your Impact- Plan, schedule, and perform VDOT bridge inspections in accordance with Bridge Owners’ requirements and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Bridges.
- Liaise with client field/facility staff, lead and assist with communicating critical condition findings.
- Direct other field team members and enforce safe operations in the field.
- Create or assist with creating and/or reviewing all required inspection reports.
- Ensure technical compliance with all applicable standards and specifications.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Support the Mid‑Atlantic District and National Bridge Inspection group in performing bridge, ancillary, and culvert inspections in different jurisdictions as required.
- Support in the preparation of proposals, tasks, reports, and other documents.
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
- 10+ years of bridge inspection (NBIS) experience with VDOT and other transportation clients.
- Project Manager/Team Leader experience in VA and other states as necessary.
- Extensive successful management of bridge inspection projects for VDOT.
- Completion of the NHI Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges course and additional NHI courses (e.g., NSTM, LRFR and scour related).
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Demonstrated high‑level self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.
- Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance to junior team or project members, with strict QA/QC adherence.
- Physically capable of continuous field work, including working at heights, in close quarters, climbing, carrying ladders, and operating in adverse weather.
- Excellent attention to detail, critical thinking, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to work well in a team‑oriented structure.
- Valid, unrestricted driver’s license.
- Ability to supervise, train and direct the work of team members.
- Cognizant of time and budget management.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
- Additional FHWA/NHI training – Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges and Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures.
- Experience inspecting complex bridges and ancillary sign structures for VDOT and other transportation agencies.
- Familiarity with or certifications in NDT techniques, UAS applications, rope access techniques, and/or UAS operations.
