Summary

CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well-cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP. The CYP Assistant's day includes helping children develop social skills such as making friends and conflict resolution; make healthy choices whether it be choosing nutritional snacks or appropriate recreational activities; build self-help and school readiness skills; and explore the environment around them.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Curriculum:
    Develop schedules and activity plans, review input from other CY Program Assistants, implement activities and events that meet the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs of children and youth, and promote safety, health, and nutrition practices. Prepare options for children and youth with special requirements and assist in implementing plans as directed by supervisors.
  • Indoor and Outdoor Environment:
    Prepare, arrange, and maintain indoor/outdoor activity areas; set up displays and bulletin boards; inventory equipment and ensure supplies are available; secure facilities and materials.
  • Interactions and Relationships:
    Establish a program environment that sustains participant interest and promotes positive interactions; interact with children and youth using approved guidance techniques.
  • Supervision of Children and Youth:
    Provide care, supervision, and accountability for program participants in compliance with DoD, NAF components, and local policies; monitor whereabouts and safety; supervise during daily activities and field trips; ensure proper sign-out procedures.
  • Parent and Employee Communication:
    Communicate professionally with parents and staff; provide daily feedback on children/youth and program activities; participate in conferences as needed.
  • Assessment:
    Observe and document developmental progression and concerns; participate in program evaluation using designated tools.
  • Compliance:
    Assist in achieving DoD certification and national accreditation and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; notify supervisor of health, fire, and safety concerns.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    Collect, maintain, and report program participation data; perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications

Conditions of Employment:
Incumbents must pass background checks and fingerprint checks (DoD requirements), may require pre-employment/ random drug testing, and other prerequisites as described by DoD policies. Some positions may require a probationary period. E-Verify may be used to confirm employment eligibility. Real  for access to certain installations may apply.

Education:
Must provide a copy of your HS Diploma, GED, or college transcripts showing degree awarded/conferred when you apply.

Note:

Prior experience working with children/youth is preferred.

Experience Levels and KSAs:

  • Entry Level (CY-1702-01): Ability to communicate in English (oral and written); follow instructions; complete required DoN training; promote effective working relationships; work cooperatively in a team.
  • Intermediate Level (CY-1702-01): Knowledge of basic child and youth development principles; ability to implement developmentally appropriate practices; interpret curriculum; follow written instructions; plan and organize; collaborate with colleagues; six months of relevant experience.
  • Target Level (CY-1702-02): Knowledge of development principles to tailor program responses; ability to implement and provide high-quality direct care; promote relationships; one year of relevant experience; completion of DoD training or equivalent credentials (e.g., CDA/MSA) or a 2-year degree in related fields.
