Starting Pay Rate:
$27.63 ($57,470.38 annualized)

Job Duty Summary:
Under general supervision by the Director of Public Works, Foreman, and lead workers, the Public Works Laborer performs a variety of semi-skilled work tasks and utilization of equipment related to the operations of the Public Works Department for the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure and assets that include roadways, storm sewers, sidewalks, street lights, trees and parkways and assists with other Public Works activities related to water distribution and wastewater collection.
Essential job functions - Duties and responsibilities not in hierarchical order:
Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Safely perform heavy manual tasks associated with parkway tree care including: new tree planning, tree removal, tree pruning or trimming, limb and brush chipping, stump removal, and parkway restoration.
- Safely utilize hand, power, pneumatic, and other machinery to perform tree care work including chainsaws, pole saws, hand saws, axes, ropes, or other equipment as necessary.
- Safely operate trucks and equipment required to perform a variety of tasks including an aerial lift truck, dump truck, backhoe, end loader, street sweeper, vactor truck, and others.
- Safely perform street maintenance and repair tasks including full-depth pavement patching consisting of Hot Mix Asphalt and/or concrete, pouring of concrete curbs, aprons and sidewalks, pothole patching, assist with striping and street sign installation and removal.
- Safely perform a variety of tasks to maintain and repair the storm sewer collection system including, excavation to remove and replace damaged sewers, replacing or repairing storm inlets/catch basins, vactoring and flushing clogged sewer lines, dewatering pumps and others.
- Safely perform snow and ice removal operations that include plowing, salting and loading of plow trucks.
- Assist with other Public Work Utility operations such as excavation, trenching, or hydro excavation to make repairs to water or sanitary sewer mains. This may include working at heights up to 60 ft and in excavations up to 10 feet in depth.
- Must be a High School Graduate or Equal.
- Must be able to secure a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes and tanker endorsement within sixty (60) days of hire.
- Must be able to successfully pass a background screening after conditional offer of employment.
- Must possess a valid Illinois State Driver's License and pass a Driver's abstract review.
- Basic knowledge of forestry operations and maintenance of tree care.
- Basic knowledge and operation of equipment that includes backhoe, end loader, street sweeper, dump/plow truck, vactor truck, pickup trucks, and others.
- Basic mechanical operation of equipment and tools such as air compressors, portable generators, wrenches, hammers, power saws, drills, impact wrenches, and others.
- Basic knowledge of OSHA guidelines and able to follow safety procedures and policies set by the Village.
- Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Must have the ability to work independently and properly document work performed.
- Must be able to perform heavy manual tasks (lift up to 40 lbs.) A thorough pre-employment physical examination upon job offer will be required.
- Must cooperate with all weather or department related emergencies and call outs
