Under general supervision, the Utility Line Locator identifies and marks the location of water, wastewater, storm sewer, traffic lines and fiber lines to prevent damage and service interruptions during construction.
Responsibilities- Locate City taps, water and wastewater lines, traffic lines, storm sewer lines and fiber optic cables as requested.
- Assist contractor by identifying unknown lines at work sites.
- Locate and mark fiber, water and sewer services for both Public Works and other City departments and contractors; locate and operate water valves, wastewater, storm, traffic conduits and other City owned facilities.
- Repair leaks on service lines and water meters; conduct pressure and water flow tests; replace and install new water meters as needed.
- Maintain warehouse supply inventory.
- Address and respond to complaints and concerns from citizens.
- Perform on-call duties as assigned.
- Perform related duties as required or assigned.
Work is performed throughout the City and requires exposure to hazardous chemicals, inclement weather conditions, wastewater, and potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery. May be required to climb ladders, dig and work in trenches, and lift and move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
Education, Training, and Experience GuidelinesHigh school diploma or GED equivalent AND six (6) months of previous public works utility experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge- Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
- Records maintenance and retention practices and procedures.
- Tools, methods, materials, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of water and wastewater systems.
- Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
- Local geography and street names.
- Line locating and marking practices and procedures.
- Operating basic maintenance tools and equipment.
- Completing accurate mathematical calculations.
- Following written and verbal instructions.
- Organizing work and setting priorities to meet deadlines.
- Following safe work practices including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Reading and accurately interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, grid books, and instructions.
- Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Must possess a Class D Water license within one year of employment.
- Must obtain a Class B CDL with tanker endorsements within 6 months of employment.
