Position: Master 150GT

Onboard our Salish Sea Vessels as Master, you are a leader of a professional marine team who inspires and educates passengers from all over the world! You will be working with a team who is outgoing and passionate about sharing their knowledge of our BC coast and its wildlife. You are responsible for the safe operation of the vessel, its crew, and passengers.

As a leader in the industry, you are also responsible for ensuring the vessels are operated in accordance with Marine Industry Standards.

Responsibilities:
  • Operating the vessel in accordance with Transport Canada Standards, Transport Canada Shipping Act, and its regulations.
  • Conducting crew drills as required by Transport Canada and company SOPs.
  • Start up and shutdown of the vessel each working day with the assistance of the Chief Mate.
  • Ensuring the vessel is ready for the start of the next day.
  • Working with the shore crew to provide our guests with the best possible experience.
  • Operating in accordance with the Whale Watching Guidelines as set out by the PWWA.
  • Assisting in the day-to-day maintenance of the vessel.
  • Vessel refit to help prepare the vessels at the start of the season, including Transport Canada safety inspections; assist with shutdown and winterizing vessels at the end of the season.
  • Required Skills and Personal Attributes:
  • Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic Certificate.
  • Marine Advanced First Aid.
  • MED- STCW Basic Safety.
  • MED - Survival Craft, other than fast rescue boats.
  • MED - Advanced Firefighting.
  • SEN Limited.
  • Valid Marine Medical Certificate.
  • Working knowledge of the PWWA Regulations.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills with passengers and crew.
  • Ability to work on your feet for up to 12 hours.
  • Previous experience in the whale watching industry and knowledge of local marine wildlife is considered a strong asset but not required.
  • An understanding of electrical and mechanical systems including light marine diesel engines combined with the ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair small issues should they arise.
