General Statement of Duties
This position is a newly approved Building Inspector role responsible for planning, directing, controlling and coordinating all City building inspection activities and supervising inspection personnel. The Building Inspector determines department needs, establishes goals, implements procedures and evaluates results obtained. The role performs administrative and manual tasks for the coordination and enforcement of all Building Codes as required by the City of Verona Code of Ordinances and Wisconsin State Statutes and the Wisconsin Administrative Code.
The Building Inspector coordinates, interprets and applies Title 15, sections 1 through 6 of the Verona Code of Ordinances. Decisions within areas of responsibility are made independently.

Job Duties and Responsibilities- Oversee all aspects of the day‑to‑day operation of the Building Inspection Department.
- Receive inspection requests, prioritize and assign work, and follow up on owner/contractor concerns.
- Review commercial and residential site plans for compliance and coordinate the review process with the City Engineer, Director of Planning and Development, and Director of Public Works.
- Supervise the Assistant Building Inspector.
- Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with state codes and approved site plans.
- Maintain records for building permits, inspections, and certificates of occupancy.
- Advise City leadership (Mayor, Common Council, Plan Commission, Board of Appeals, Director of Planning and Development, City Administrator) on relevant issues.
- Respond to complaints and suggest solutions on building and zoning matters.
- Review relevant legislation that may affect department operations or ordinances.
- Prepare periodic reports on building statistics for state, federal, and private industry, and city records.
- Attend Board of Appeals meetings and advise on applicable laws and regulations.
- Interpret building codes for builders and homeowners.
- Oversee and monitor the department budget.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of commercial and residential building construction and building codes.
- Ability to read, interpret and apply provisions of laws, ordinances and rules.
- Ability to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the public and city employees.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Computer proficiency for word processing, database and spreadsheet analysis.
- Knowledge of zoning and planning concepts.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.) – required.
- Minimum six years experience in a Building Inspection department or related organization.
- Required Wisconsin State
Certifications:
UDC Construction, UDC Electric, UDC Plumbing, UDC HVAC, Commercial Building, Commercial Electrical (within 12 months), Commercial Plumbing (within 12 months). - Valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
- Experience in supervision and management.
Physical Requirements
The role requires approximately 60% office work and 40% field work in all Wisconsin weather conditions. Field duties include sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing ladders, and using equipment requiring moderate to high dexterity.
