Overview
Enforces the County's Animal Control Ordinance under the daily supervision and general direction of the Animal Control Manager.
Responsibilities- Handles routine daily calls in assigned areas
- Responds to requests and locates reported stray animals
- Checks animals for county license and microchips
- Ensures that regulations are enforced
- Advises citizens on the responsibility of animal ownership
- Transports animals, wild and domestic, determines if veterinarian care is needed
- Handles animals in accordance with policies and procedures
- Works at pet-friendly emergency shelters during disasters
High School Diploma / GED and two years of experience in the field of animal control, law enforcement, veterinary medicine, public health, or related working experience, or an equivalent combination of formal education and working experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations- Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License
- Animal Control Certification, Chemical Immobilization Certification, and Euthanasia Certification preferred, but not required.
Knowledge of pertinent laws, ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, and the ability to interpret and enforce applicable laws, ordinances, and policies and procedures firmly and tactfully.
Knowledge and ability to handle and restrain animals in the proper manner and to determine if the animals are vicious and/or diseased.
Ability to use all equipment operated by the division.
Ability to physically handle wildlife and livestock.
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the public, various agencies, and fellow employees.
Ability to maintain animal control records, vehicle maintenance records, and other records as necessary.
Ability to use a personal computer and associated software. Ability to work after hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Environmental Conditions- Work is performed outdoors with exposure to heat and humidity and adverse weather conditions.
- Work can have exposure to threatening and dangerous animals and livestock.
- The position will require work during disasters (i.e., hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.)
