LocationVernon State Hospital, 4730 College Dr, Vernon, TX
Salary- $3,100.00 - $4,365.66 per month
Day shift; up to 5% travel. Eligible for overtime, evenings, nights, weekends, and maximum security locations.
Job SummaryThe Security Officer performs complex, journey‑level security work and maintains a secure environment at the state hospital. Primary duties include monitoring alarms and surveillance cameras, patrolling buildings and grounds, checking badges or identification at campus gates, and handling after‑hours emergency calls to enhance safety for patients, employees, and visitors. The officer disseminates emergency responses, coordinates information, and notifies facility management and law enforcement when appropriate.
EssentialJob Functions
- Attend work on a regular basis and follow the agency leave policy.
- Monitor surveillance cameras for unauthorized persons, fires, and unusual occurrences; report emergencies immediately.
- Conduct routine patrols of buildings and grounds.
- Coordinate emergency responses and notification to hospital management and law enforcement.
- Assist in apprehending suspects when possible.
- Prepare timely and accurate incident and investigative reports.
- Evaluate and recommend changes to security regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in disaster response and continuity of operations activities.
- Knowledge of building/premise security and surveillance equipment.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations for building admissions and exits, and alarm devices.
- Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to write incident and investigative reports.
- CPR certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Ability to communicate with potentially aggressive patients, visitors, and employees.
- Ability to patrol grounds, detect danger, and take appropriate action.
- Ability to prepare concise reports.
- Ability to remain calm and react quickly in emergencies.
- Valid Texas driver license required; otherwise obtain within 90 days of hire.
- CPR certified or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- 24 months of work experience.
- Two years of experience in security, law enforcement, or military preferred.
- Must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
- Male applicants 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service.
- All applicants must be at least 18 years of age (Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21).
- Flexibility in work hours may be required; may work overtime and extended hours.
- Compliance with HHSC immunization policy; employees must be vaccinated per level of contact. Unvaccinated influenza requirement may necessitate mask and protective measures.
