Job Description

The department comprises nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state supported living centers.

The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant IV (PNA Team Lead) performs advanced rehabilitative patient care services under the clinical supervision of a licensed nurse to provide quality psychiatric nursing care in an inpatient setting. Responsibilities include coordinating assignments for PNAs, assisting patients with activities of daily living, instructing staff on procedures, observing and documenting patient conditions, participating in individualized and unit-based programming, and contributing to recovery and admissions teams.

Requires limited supervision with significant independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • Attend work on a regular basis and support a specific or rotating schedule, with overtime as needed.
  • As team lead, coordinate assignments for PNAs and assist patients with daily living activities to promote independence.
  • Execute patient-centered communication and accompany patients to appointments when required.
  • Promote a positive workplace, share information with PNAs, and participate in recovery/admissions team activities.
  • Provide guidance to PNAs on patient care, documentation, and progress toward recovery goals.
  • Develop treatment plans and train PNAs to engage in recovery processes.
  • Utilize basic computer skills to document and communicate patient care information.
  • Assist licensed nurses with monitoring medications, vital signs, and related tasks within competency level.
  • Promote safety and engage patients to minimize unsafe situations.
  • Co-facilitate groups and promote program participation.
  • Respond to crisis using least restrictive interventions and document appropriately under supervision of an RN.
  • Perform CPR/Heimlich and AED use per American Heart Association standards.
  • Provide timely patient information to the RN and participate in shift changes.
  • Serve as a preceptor for new employees and temporary personnel.

Additional duties may include disaster response or Continuity of Operations activation, with possible shift changes or location adjustments. This position may be eligible for additional pay for evenings, nights, weekends, or work at maximum security locations.
