Description
The Village of Vernon Hills is seeking self-motivated individuals with a strong work ethic to fill a Civil Engineering Intern position in the Engineering and Public Works Department. This position will work 40 hours per week, generally between 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, during the summer months with the option for additional winter (break time) work. The duration of the internship shall correspond with college summer break (start and end dates are flexible).

This position is performed predominantly in the field outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions; with extensive walking; but will include office time as well.

Example of Duties
The Civil Engineering Intern will work under the general direction of the Assistant Village Engineer and will assist in performing a wide variety of civil and municipal engineering related functions, including evaluating pavement conditions, construction inspections, resident communication, drainage utility investigation, contractor coordination, traffic studies, clerical work, and any other related tasks.

Typical Qualifications
The following requirements must be met:

• Possession of a valid driver's license
• Ability to work 40 hours per week
• Candidate must be enrolled in a Civil Engineering or a related program and have interest in pursuing a career in civil engineering
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and GIS software is preferred
• Passage of a pre-employment physical, drug screen, criminal background check, motor vehicle history report, employment, education and reference check
