Job Title: Auto Services Technician
Department: Highways
Grade: 10
Reports To: Fleet Manager, Assistant Fleet Manager and/or Fleet Services Coordinator
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORKPerforms advanced skilled work and diagnostics maintaining and repairing a variety of vehicles and equipment. Direction is provided by Fleet Manager, Assistant Fleet Manager, and/or Fleet Services Coordinator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / TYPICAL TASKS- Perform COMAR 11.22 and state vehicle inspections, maintain fleet inventory records.
- Assist in design, fabrication, installation of specialty parts; perform welding, fabrication; maintain tools, equipment, shop facilities.
- Load and move equipment; remove, replace, or overhaul engines, transmissions, and major components; mount and balance tires.
- Perform preventive maintenance on mowing equipment, pumps, compressors, trailers and other automotive components.
- Diagnose and repair hybrid, electric, gasoline, flex‑fuel, propane and diesel vehicles; repair drivetrain, hydraulic, pneumatic suspension systems.
- Perform starting and charging system tests; rewire trucks and vehicles; install electrical and hydraulic components.
- Check and replace standard parts: generators, starter motors, wiper motors, drive chain, ball joints, brake linings, wheel bearings.
- Repair cooling, air conditioning, and hydraulic systems.
- Supervise less skilled technicians, mechanics or helpers.
- Use scanners, CAN laptops, analyzers for electronic power train diagnostics.
- Operate industrial sand blasting equipment.
- Review technical service bulletins and reports.
- Order replacement parts; maintain records of labor hours and parts installed.
- Maintain tool, equipment, shop facilities and grounds.
- Perform standard automotive services: lubrication, oil changes, fueling, cleaning.
- Engine tune‑ups and adjust valves, spark gaps, ignition, brakes, and clutches; ensure emissions compliance.
- Report for duty during emergencies and call‑outs.
- Install and repair electronic and radio equipment; perform related work as required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES

- Advanced knowledge of internal combustion engines and vehicle systems; preventive maintenance techniques; safety precautions.
- Skill in basic welding (SMAW/MIG) and cutting.
- Ability to operate county vehicles or equipment.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and prepare maintenance reports.
- Leadership and communication skills.
- Computer skills for diagnostic software.
- Must possess Class “B” CDL or ability to obtain within 9 months; 5 ASE certifications in Auto & Light Truck or Medium/Heavy‑Duty Truck.
- High school diploma or equivalent; extensive experience repairing automotive and power equipment.
- Five (5) years full‑time experience in servicing, maintaining, and repairing motor vehicles or equipment, including at least one year with responsibility for automotive or heavy‑truck repair.
- Vocational training or factory certified automotive courses.
