Introduction:
The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). a qualified employee to serve as a Transportation Maintainer 3 (Payloader Operator) at the Groton Maintenance facility.
• Current DOT employee or potential employee holding a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank endorsement.
• Must produce a copy of CDL Class A or B with tank endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner’s Card, and a current Commercial Driver’s Card at the interview.
• Willingness to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, during the winter season and to stand by for emergency events.
• Must reside within a 20‑mile radius of the Groton job location.
Selection Plan• Current State of Connecticut employee of the listed agency for at least six (6) months of full‑time service.
• Minimum qualifications as stated in the posting must be met by the closing date.
Job Role and ResponsibilitiesThe Maintainer 3 performs a range of skilled tasks to ensure safe and efficient highway operations.
- Operate and maintain a payloader and other construction equipment.
- Conduct snow and ice removal operations and respond to accidents.
- Perform road, bridge, and roadside maintenance: paving, pothole repair, sweeping, and guardrail installation/repair.
- Assist with tree removal, drainage work, and other roadside tasks.
- Complete accurate shop records, reports, and equipment inspections.
- Knowledge of construction, maintenance, and repair techniques for roadsides and bridges.
- Ability to operate and maintain complex mechanical equipment such as load‑liners, flail mowers, and snow removal trucks.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of safety procedures and ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Proficiency with basic computer software.
• Two (2) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, with operation and care of mechanical equipment.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience safely operating a payloader.
- Experience maintaining and performing minor equipment repairs.
- Experience repairing guardrail utilizing a payloader.
• Physical strength, stamina, and agility required to lift heavy weights and work in extreme weather conditions.
• Exposure to loud machinery, road traffic, heights, and potential chemical hazards. Protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles may be required.
