Job SummaryThe Resident Care Associate delivers comprehensive care to residents in a warm, home‑like environment following individualized care plans.
Principal Duties / Responsibilities- Provides ongoing supervision of residents’ health‑related activities; follows healthcare professional instructions and obtains medical attention when needed.
- Recognizes and assists in the prevention of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
- Recognizes and reports a resident’s change of condition, especially when more time is needed.
- Assists residents with Activities of Daily Living (bathing, grooming, hygiene, dressing, toileting, mobility/transfers, dining).
- Participates in functional evaluation and service plan reviews.
- Removes, launders, folds, and properly returns resident linens and personal laundry.
- Serves food as directed, including feeding skills where regulations permit.
- Provides and receives shift reports orally or in written logs.
- Handles resident behavioral expressions effectively.
- Reacts calmly in emergency situations.
- Communicates resident information through reports, calendars, and scheduling of appointments.
- Documents and maintains accurate records.
- Checks residents daily for cleanliness, appropriate clothing, and continence issues.
- Uses proper sanitary procedures for tables, dining rooms, and kitchens after meals.
- Checks resident rooms for general cleanliness and hazard safety.
- Notes residents’ material needs (briefs, clothing, toothpaste, pads, etc.).
- Measures and records vital signs as required by state regulations.
- Outlines and handles resident safety and risk proactively.
- Communicates with residents, families, and friends.
- Completes incident reports before the end of the shift.
- Participates in daily programs and recreational activities with programming staff.
- Responds to personal emergency systems and calls for backup when necessary.
- Mentors new Resident Care Associates.
- Performs special projects/assignments as delegated.
- Current certification as a Nursing Assistant or completion of a Certified Home Health Aide / Homemaker / Personal Care Homemaker training program.
- In Rhode Island, all Resident Care Associates must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
- High School education preferred.
- Proficient at reading and understanding a Resident Care Service Plan or assignment.
- Understanding of advanced directives and end‑of‑life care.
- Knowledge of nursing functions in assisted living, memory care, and/or skilled nursing settings.
- Understanding of quality of care and life objectives.
- Demonstrates application of Resident Care Standards and Practices.
- Awareness of Benchmark Standards and Practices.
- Works with state regulations and Resident Handbook policies.
- Current First Aid and Heimlich certification, if required.
Physical demands include lifting and carrying objects up to 100 lbs., transferring residents with gait belts or transfer devices, repetitive arm and hand use, operating wheelchairs, maintaining posture while standing or sitting, and exposure to environmental hazards such as dust, heat or cold. Staff must also be prepared for emergency responses and use of personal protective equipment.
