Principal Duties / Responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing supervision of residents’ health‑related activities; comply with health care instructions and seek medical attention when needed.
  • Recognize and assist in the prevention of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
  • Recognize and report residents’ changes of condition, especially those requiring more time to deliver care.
  • Assist residents with activities of daily living (bathing, grooming, hygiene, dressing, toileting, mobility/transfers, dining).
  • Participate in functional evaluations and service plan reviews.
  • Manage resident linens and personal laundry (remove, launder, fold, and return).
  • Serve residents food as directed, including feeding skills if regulations permit.
  • Receive and provide shift reports orally and/or writtenly.
  • Effectively handle resident behavioral expressions and respond calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ensure resident information is communicated to staff through reports and calendars (appointments, outings, etc.).
  • Document and maintain accurate records.
  • Check all residents daily for cleanliness, appropriate clothing, and continence issues.
  • Maintain sanitary procedures for dining areas and life enrichment kitchen after meals.
  • Communicate and document residents’ material needs (briefs, clothing, toothpaste, pads, etc.).
  • Measure and accurately record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height) per state regulations.
  • Assess resident safety/risk proactively.
  • Communicate with residents, families, and friends effectively.
  • Complete incident reports prior to the end of the working day.
  • Participate with programming staff and residents in daily programs and recreational activities.
  • Respond to emergencies using personal emergency response systems and know when to call for backup.
  • Serve as a mentor to new Resident Care Associates.
  • Perform special projects/assignments as delegated.
Education / Experience / Licensure / Certification
  • Current certification as a nursing assistant or successful completion of a certified home health aide or homemaker/personal care program.
  • In Rhode Island, all Resident Care Associates must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
  • High school education preferred.
Required Skills / Abilities
  • Proficiency reading and understanding a Resident Care Service Plan or assignment.
  • Understanding of advanced directives and end‑of‑life care.
  • Understanding of nursing functions in assisted living, memory care, and/or skilled nursing.
  • Understanding of quality of care and life objectives.
  • Review and demonstrate understanding of Resident Care Standards and Practices with the Resident Care Director/Director of Nursing or supervisor.
  • Knowledge of Benchmark Standards and Practices.
  • Knowledge of state regulations as they pertain to the job.
  • Knowledge of policies in the Resident Handbook.
  • Current First Aid and Heimlich certification, if required by state regulation.
Physical Demands

Typical duties include lifting and carrying up to 100 lbs, using transfer devices and gait belts, moving objects of varying weights (10–100 lbs), pushing or pulling equipment and carts, and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Exposure to environmental factors such as extreme heat or cold, dust, and house pets may occur. Adequate repetitive arm and hand use is expected. All tasks are performed while maintaining a safe work environment and following all relevant safety procedures.
