Position OverviewThe Mobile Crisis Peer Support Specialist is an essential member of a multidisciplinary mobile crisis response team, providing voluntary, non-clinical peer support to individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, or co-occurring crises in community settings. The role is grounded in direct lived experience and emphasizes empathy, mutuality, advocacy, and respect for self-determination. Peer Support Specialists do not conduct clinical screening, assessment, diagnosis, or disposition decisions;
instead, they offer emotional support, shared understanding, and system navigation while working alongside clinicians and emergency responders who retain responsibility for all clinical and legal decision‑making.
- Provide non‑clinical peer support through active listening, empathy, validation, and shared understanding grounded in lived experience.
- Offer a supportive and calming presence during mobile crisis responses in homes and community settings.
- Use intentional self‑disclosure, when appropriate, to foster trust, hope, and connection.
- Support individuals in understanding their rights within crisis response systems.
- Advocate for individuals’ expressed preferences and choices during interactions with systems and providers.
- Assist individuals in identifying and accessing community-based resources, natural supports, and follow‑up services.
- Support warm handoffs and continuity of care in collaboration with the mobile crisis team.
- Provide follow‑up peer support, in person or remotely, as appropriate.
- Document peer support services using agency‑approved peer documentation tools.
- Participate in team meetings, debriefs, training, and reflective supervision.
