The Medical Technologist (MT) will provide comprehensive laboratory testing services to support patient care at the White River Junction VA Medical Center. Working within a collaborative clinical team, the MT will perform a wide range of diagnostic procedures across chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, blood bank, microbiology, and coagulation. The role ensures accurate, timely, and reliable test results in accordance with national standards and VA requirements.
Duties/Responsibilities- Perform routine and specialized testing in chemistry, urinalysis, hematology, coagulation, blood bank, and microbiology using automated and manual methods.
- Conduct instrument operation, calibration, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance.
- Carry out routine daily and weekly quality control and participate in CAP proficiency testing.
- Accurately process, evaluate, and report patient specimens and results.
- Identify and resolve issues in specimen collection, testing, or reporting.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, patient identification, and protection of sensitive patient information.
- Deliver services in a professional, patient-centered manner that meets VA standards of care.
- Support weekend, holiday, and rotating shifts as needed by the laboratory.
The job duties are flexible and subject to change depending upon operational needs.
Required Skills/Abilities- Must be able to multi-task, be detail-oriented, be organized and have excellent verbal and communication skills.

- Excellent communication and time management skills.
- Must be able to successfully complete the AMI Credentialing Process.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related science (e.g., chemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology).
- Completion of a NAACLS-, CAAHEP-, or ABHES-accredited clinical practice program OR equivalent combination of degree and clinical experience as outlined by ASCP/AMT requirements.
- Current certification as MT, MLS, or CLS by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
- Minimum 3 years of recent experience in chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology.
- Must be able to work in a safe manner following all safety rules and regulations. Must work as a team member to improve safety culture and quality.
- Read and follow instructions. Demonstrate safe work behavior.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
- Must be able to push, pull, reach, and bend frequently.
- Utilize appropriate methods for interacting effectively and professionally with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, educations, races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, lifestyles, and physical abilities.
