TRIO SSS AssistantOverview: To contribute to the goals of the Vermont State University
-Johnson TRIO SSS Program by providing mentorship, programming, and support to students who are first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities, as well as students from otherwise underrepresented backgrounds. The Assistant is an integral part of the professional staff and will coordinate the Summer Bridge program, collaborate on projects, counsel a small caseload of students in non-cognitive skills building, and assist students in accessing resources.
Essential Functions:
- Develop, implement, and assess TRIO programming including speakers and activities that will positively contribute to the retention and success of first-generation students. Programming responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Summer Bridge planning and supervision, new Student Summer Orientation, and assisting the Director with other tasks related to student access and success. - Review Summer Bridge applications, oversee correspondence, monitor processes, and make recommendations regarding acceptance to the Director.
- Promote TRIO events and recruit students through various outreach efforts, including social media.
- Counsel a small caseload of students who require support with non-cognitive skills, such as time-management, organization, test preparation, study skills, etc., including periodic one-on-one meetings with each student.
- Document student interactions in Student Access database.
- Attend TRIO SSS Academic Support staff meetings as schedules allow.
- Confer regularly with TRIO SSS Academic Support staff regarding any concerns about participants' physical, emotional, or social well-being.
- Attend recommended professional development opportunities, which may include remote and in-person trainings.
- Recruit, train, and supervise students for positions as Summer Bridge mentors, TRIO Program Assistants, Social Media Coordinator, and Learning Center Assistants.
- Coordinate testing for students under the guidance of the Coordinator or Director of Disability Services and monitor testing, as needed.
- Manage the technology lending program to include laptops, noise-cancelling headphones, graphing calculators, etc.
- Provide administrative support and assist at the front desk as needed.
- Other special projects as requested.
- Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline, such as education, counseling, psychology, or social work.
- Enrollment in a VTSU graduate program.
- High energy level and enthusiasm for helping first-generation students, low-income students, students with disabilities, and students from otherwise underrepresented backgrounds to achieve good academic standing, persist in college, and graduate on time.
- Positive attitude and the ability to display sensitivity to a wide range of ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and life-style differences.
- Strong organizational skills, including program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Excellent communication skills, including writing and presenting to small groups.
- Excellent MS Office skills, especially strong skills in mail merging between Excel or Access, and Word.
- Very good interpersonal skills, including counseling students in attainment of academic and personal goals.
- Ability to work independently.
- TRIO experience, preferred.

Supervision Received:
Director of the Academic Support Center or their designee
Location: Johnson Campus
Part Time: 20-30 hours per week
This job is dependent on grant funding and will cease when grant funding is no longer available.
